Prairie Dogs and Devil Dogs.

This weekend I was looking over some of the pictures I took throughout the course of 2007, trying to select a few of them to post before the New Year.

I may have mentioned once before that whenever NancyTW and I are in a new city, we try to spend at least a little time visiting the local zoo. In July, we were at the St. Louis Zoo when my sugar dropped below freezing and forced us to have lunch a little earlier than usual. The Zoo has a goodly number of places to eat, but the menu board of the one we were near was too utterly complex for me to understand in my hypoglycemic state. So Nancy did the ordering for both of us while I sat on a bench, Prairie%20Dogs.JPGeating glucose tablets. Later, I learned that the complicated menu actually listed only about five simple choices, consisting mostly of burgers, dogs, and Budweiser. Again, Nancy to the rescue.

About a month before that, I shot this image of some prairie dogs at the Phoenix Zoo. It was quite hot, and they seemed intent on sitting around, finding ways to cool off, and looking cute.

Two months earlier, we had done a self-guided tour of Arizona, starting in the Scottsdale area and driving up to Kingman, then staying at a number of towns on historic Rt. 66 until we eventually turned south again four or five days later to get back to Phoenix.

You find some interesting places when you’re out in the middle of nowhere.

Aw, look at those guys. That pretty much sums up Arizona in the heat. And low blood sugar.

We lived in Tucson for about 3 years and I was amazed by the desert... again and again and again.

Amylia -- It was as if they were playing to the crowd (even though it was just the two of us at the time.) We wanted to scoop them up and take them home. I'm glad I was "normo-glycemic" for their little performance! Have a quick and safe trip back.

Beth -- You know you're in trouble when "Chicken Wings" transmogrifies into a Nauruan dialect. Yes, the desert is indeed an amazing place, and I'm eager to return for another look. Happy CGMS Day to you!

Cute pic! Coincidently, I'm currently scoping out a possible trip to Arizona in March. So many great places to visit there I haven't been able to decide on a city yet. Was leaning towards Tucson but as of a couple days ago Scottsdale is in the lead. Was Scottsdale pretty easy to get around?

Alison -- The Scottsdale/Phoenix area was not difficult to find our way around in. The major streets are basically laid out like a grid, with lots of side streets in between. There were some times of fairly heavy traffic on the highways, but things generally kept moving well and we never lost any time sitting in our rental car. If memory serves me, you will need to take a shuttle bus from the airport terminal to the car rental facility. I think it was about a 5-10 minute ride. If you have enough time, plan to visit the Grand Canyon for some breathtaking views. Pictures in magazines simply cannot do it justice.

Cool, that's very good to know. I only have about 3 days of vacation so I don't know if I'll make it to the Grand Canyon this time around but it's something I definitely want to see. I also really want to visit Sedona..I'm thinking for a future trip it might be cool to split the time between the two of those since distance wise it's not too bad. I'm really eager to get out and do some hiking, is Scottsdale a pretty good place for that?

That Nancy - she takes such good care you, doesn't she? You're very blessed to have her. I wonder what you would have ordered had she not been there. :)

Alison -- Check your e-mail for a some info on hiking in Scottsdale. My e-mail has been acting up lately, so please let me know if it doesn't show up, and I'll resend it.

Donna -- Yes, that's very, very true, and I probably would have asked for fried workboot with a side of malaria.

I've always wanted to go out West. Those photos definitely provide great motivation to hit the road, so to speak.

Prairie Dogs are pretty cute, but they disturb me. You see, I used to own a ferret (my roommate was allergic to cats & no dogs allowed, but I digress) When researching my new pet, I learned something pretty sad. Apparently, ferrets eat prairie dogs in the wild. Isn't that AWFUL! Anyway, that always comes to mind when I see them.

On another note, thank God for our loved ones. Sounds like she's pretty incredible.
