Sox & Summer Soon Heading North!

This is for all my D-friends up north who are mired in the relentless, icy winter grip of Mother Nature. It is coming to an end, and I offer proof: Baseball!

In just another month, the World Series Champion Boston Red Sox will return to friendly Fenway. If that doesn’t make you feel at least a tiny bit warmer, then you’re either way, way too absorbed in who’s stealing Superdelegates, or you’re a yankee fan.

The Sox took to the field at City of Palms Park in Ft. Myers on Friday afternoon against the Minnesota Twins, in front of the 67th consecutive sellout crowd of nearly 8,000 fans. It’s always a source of amusement at the park to see the advertising for Stop & Shop and the New England Ford Dealers just beyond the warning track. You won’t find either of those organizations here in Southwest Florida.

While the grounds crew put away batting cages and painted fresh lines before game time, I couldn’t help but notice the boyish figures of the legendary Johnny Pesky and American League Rookie of the Year Dustin Pedroia juxtaposed in the otherwise empty Red Sox dugout. The pair are virtual bookends in Red Sox history. It was puzzling, though, that according to the newspaper, Pesky was scheduled to be signing autographs at the grand opening of a new supermarket thirty-five miles away at precisely this moment. I’m glad he didn’t go.

Sox starter Clay Buchholz, who tossed a no-hitter last year in only his second major league start, hit the Minnesota lead-off batter, Denard Span, with his first pitch, and then got tagged for back to back dingers by Twins Justin Morneau and Craig Monroe. He settled down a little after that by getting seven of the next eight hitters in three innings, but still picked up a 7-2 loss for his efforts, with three hits, three runs scored, and three strike outs.

Jonathan Papelbon agreed to terms with the Sox for another year on Thursday. He came on in the fourth inning, and gave up a couple of runs in two innings of work. I think he got a strike out, too. But there was no Riverdancing. Believe me, I’d have a picture of it.

Some random thoughts on yesterday’s game:

It’s true that when Sox pitcher Hideki Okajima releases the ball, he is looking straight down at the ground!  That’s a scary thought if you’re a batter.

Here’s how not to play a pop up to shallow left, as demonstrated by the Minnesota Triplets.

Most of the fans stuck around long enough to see Red Sox first baseman Jeff Bailey round the bases after his too-little-too-late solo shot in the bottom of the ninth.

Now, YOU MAKE THE CALL!

Will Twins Shortstop Howie Clark be called safe or tagged out at the plate by Sox catcher Kevin Cash?  Click here to find out.

So the Sox lost, but no one went away crying. Like Jimmy Dugan said, “There’s no crying in baseball.”

Only in football.

And for all you folks in the north who think the cold, snowy weather is never, ever going to stop, take heart. Baseball has begun again, and Old Man Winter doesn’t stand a chance!

Colleen -- I guess that's about all you can do. But maybe thinking about the Sox will make it less difficult.
